The activist community is mourning the reported passing of Esaw Snipes-Garner, the widow of Eric Garner, whose death in 2014 at the hands of the NYPD helped spark a nationwide movement against police brutality.
The news was shared in a heartfelt social media post by former NBA player and activist Etan Thomas, who wrote:
“I am so devastated to hear that Eric Garner’s widow Esaw has passed away. When NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo murdered Eric Garner, it started a chain of events. Erica and Emory both passed away from heart attacks and now Esaw. Please keep Emerald and her family in your prayers.”
While an official confirmation has not yet been released by Esaw’s family or major news organizations, her reported passing has already prompted a wave of grief and reflection across social platforms.
Esaw Snipes-Garner became a powerful voice for justice following her husband Eric Garner’s death in 2014, after he was placed in a banned chokehold by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo. Her pain became public, but so did her resolve. She stood beside her daughter, Erica Garner, who emerged as a national activist before tragically passing away in 2017 at just 27 years old due to heart failure. Their son, Emory Garner, also passed away in recent years, reportedly from cardiac-related causes.
The losses in the Garner family are profound. Esaw’s strength in the face of heartbreak became a symbol of courage and endurance. With her reported passing, attention now turns to her surviving daughter, Emerald Garner, who continues to carry the legacy of her family’s fight for justice.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Garner family and all those mourning Esaw’s passing. May her memory continue to inspire the ongoing pursuit of justice and healing.
