The Richmond community is mourning the sudden loss of Jaylen Martinez, a 13-year-old basketball standout who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 23, 2025.
A Rising Star on the Court
Jaylen was known for his talent and drive. He led his Liberty Middle School team in Ashland to a county championship and averaged 27 points per game. He also played with top local AAU clubs, where coaches and teammates admired his ease on the court.
He had recently started practicing with Benedictine College Prep, where he was set to join the high school team in the fall. Many saw Jaylen as a young athlete with real promise and a bright future ahead of him.
Son of a Basketball Legend
Jaylen’s father, Joey Rodriguez, is well-known in basketball circles. As a former star at Virginia Commonwealth University, he helped lead the Rams to the Final Four in 2011. Today, he is an assistant coach at Florida International University.
The VCU basketball community expressed deep sorrow over Jaylen’s passing. Ed McLaughlin, VCU’s athletic director, said Jaylen’s passion for the game and competitive spirit had touched many people.
A Shock to the Community
Authorities in Henrico County confirmed that a juvenile died on June 23, though they have not disclosed a cause of death. The family has not shared details publicly.
Support poured in from basketball clubs, schools, and fans. One AAU league wrote, “We love you #5. Our hearts go out to Ciera and family. We are always here for you.” Another AAU teammate called Jaylen “a true competitor, a great teammate, a champion and a beloved soul.”
A Life to Remember
Though Jaylen was just thirteen, he already left a strong impression. He was a gifted player who approached the game with joy, focus, and determination. Those who knew him speak of his kindness, humility, and genuine love for basketball.
Even in a short life, Jaylen taught many the value of passion and friendship. His energy on the court will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of family, friends, coaches, and the teams he inspired.
